I really need some help with this one. My computer wont connect to the internet useing aol or and other service. I live out in the sticks but the family up the road has internet and I am writing this from there.
What has happend was we went away for about 3 months and everything was working when we left but when I got home I cant connect to the net. I get tones but it cant establish a connection. I had it in the shop and the guy swept it for viruses and come back clean. He had it on the net there because he showed me it worked. I took it home and still nothing. I called him back and he told me to call the phone company or AOL. I called aol and they said nothing was wrong and that I should call the phone company. I called them and they came out and check the line and said nothing was wrong. The phone guy used the computer and called my cell phone and I could hear myself talking throught the computer. He said that proved nothing was wrong with the line. Next he also brought in a laptop and dialed out and it connected right up. I called dell and they had me reformat my computer which I did but still nothing then they sent a guy to come and replace my modem just to be shore it wasnt that, he didnt even test it and now it is still not working. I called my computer man again and he came over and put a script in the modem settings that read +ms=v92 and said that should help. I still dont have any internet. any ideas what I can do its cost me over $200.00 and I still am no better off

What kind of programs do you have working in the background, i.e. Spyware, anti-virus, firewalls, etc.?

Just a guess:
I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the AOL software. Your modem obviously works but it's the AOL software that makes the connection to the internet.

Quick follow-up: In the 3 months or so that you were gone, was the computer disconnected from the wall power?

To answer your questions I havent installed even Anit-virus after the reformat so nothing is really running in background just what ever aol installed. I have tried reinstalling aol even useing a diffrent cd. I had the computer guy look at the main board for damage because it was connected to power but it was also on a surge protector. None was found

Try a different internet service like Peoplepc. PeoplePC Unlimited $5.47/mo. for 3 months To register by phone, call toll free (877) 947-3327 and mention offer code WEB6
or call 1-800-NETZERO and sign up for their free internet service. I am not saying to dump AOL but rather try to get connected so that you can verify your setup.Compaq Presario SR1720NX Desktop Computer
AT&T SBC Yahoo DSL Home
Linksys Router/2 computers

"He had it on the net there because he showed me it worked."
I suggest another phone cord. If it worked in one location and not another, you have to go through everything that is different from the shop. That would not be inside the computer. It would be somewhere between the modem and the wall or the drop outside the house.
And remember modems are more sensitive to line noise than phones are, so what looks good for a phone won't be so good for a modem.
Also clean all the contacts from the wall plate, the ends of the phone cord you use to hook the computer to the wall and the modem contacts, where the phone line plugs in.
If it works at the shop and not at home, it's your wiring, not the computer.
Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness
