Hello,

I have a question about hooking up a Vantec CCK-6040H Cpu Cooler. The heatsink and fan comes with a 3 to 4 pin optional connector. I have been told I should use this instead of mounting the 3 pin connector right to my motherboard. They explained to me that the power the fan uses could short out my motherboard. Is this true and if so would I connect this 4 pin connector to 1 of the leads coming of my psu? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Peter

I'm not sure about the 3 or 4 pin shortout; where did you get this info from? Any fan I have ever installed has a 3-pin plug and plugs into the mainboard.

In fact, most mobos now REQUIRE you to plug the heatsink fan into FAN1 or CPUFAN on the board, or the mainboard will shut down your CPU because the BIOS can't detect any fan RPMs. It's a fan-failsafe feature to protect the CPU against fan-failure and overheating. You may not have any choice in the matter.
