What would be required in order to be able to turn on and off the lights in my room with my computer?

You are looking for 'home automation' products. Try that in google too.

What would be required? Er, masses of networking / rewiring. It's not a simple thing to do.

Unless someone has come up with a wifi receiever for every light switch with it's own identity. That would be cool!

For relatively simple controlx use the X10 home automation system. Through the power line with wired or wireless manual or computer control.

Thanks for all the comments. It's not that i'm lazy to get up and turn on the switch, i'm just trying to do something cool :)
But some of you recommend the x10 products for automated home and so on.. but i'm interested in building such a system by myself, without using something that somebody else built.
and by the way, i want to be able to control only one switch, not the whole house.

If you want to be cool, then it would probably be easier to just get a BB gun and stock up on lightbulbs! :-)

AMD Athlon 1.8GHz

GeForce 4 w/ 128MB RAM
DVD/RW
ABIT 1.49 Mo/Bo
Beleive it or not, runs HL2 like a dream!

The advantage of using X-10 is that it is safe for the ports and can also be done wirelessly.

If want to roll your own you first have to decide on what i/o port, serial, parallel, usb or expansion bus, how you are going to interface the port to to the device and what softwae your are going to drive the port.

Windows makes it harder since there is no direct access to the hardware. In DOS you had easy access to the ports.
