Subject: Used hard drive not formatted now??OS: WinXPCPU/Ram: P4/256MB |
Comment: Last night when I tried to access a couple of directories on my 3-month-old Maxtor 160GB drive it said "Cannot access folder," something about it being corrupt. This was after capturing 3 hours of DV onto the drive. I then converted the files to MPG, and this morning the files seemed screwy. So I restarted, and now when I try to access the drive it says "The disk is not formatted"! What is going on here? Please help.

Reply: (edit)If you've checked your cables and there's no change it may be that your drive is faulty. To test this go to Maxtors Web site and download POWERMAX.EXE run it to create a floppy disk .Boot from this disk and in powerdiag run the long test, this will tell you if anything is wrong and what it is. It will also give you a fault code. Joe

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the info. I ran the tests, and everything was fine with the drive. I had to recover the data from the drive using EasyRecovery Professional and then formatted it. I still am not sure what went wrong with the drive. Could it be overheating? The drive was too hot to touch when I opened the case.
