Hi guys!

Built my own PC and everythings going alright except my USB ports! Basically Ive managed to figure out the problem. It appears that my USB doesnt provide any power!

I thought that the USBs dont work simply because when i plugged anything in, nothing happened. I have an external hard drive, which connects to USB and has an extra wire which plugs into your mouse port to supply power. Ive never had to use the extra power wire before, but when i use it here, my USB works! obviously most of my other USB devices dont come with extra power wires so they dont work.

All my parts are pretty new and up to date. Drivers and stuff are all fine. It just seems that my USB dont supply power! My power supply is 420Watts so that should be enough!

USB ports supply +5v on one of the connector pins. If it is not there at all, then something shorted it out or overloaded the +5v and damaged it. Kind of hard to do but possible. Sometimes you can measure the +5v on the pin if there is no load, but even a small load causes it to fail.

If a failing USB port is on the system board, there is not much you can do but replace the system board or use a PCI bus USB port card. I have seen a few older boards that have a small fuse that can be replaced, but newer boards do not have a fuse.

As the USB +5v protection differers in design from one board to another, you could have used your device on one that allowed a higher current flow and the new one does not. Not using the devices extra power source could have blown the new boards +5v protection circuit.

Does device manager indicate that the USB ports are properly installed?
