USB-PCI adapter not working

Hi!
I have a very old system (AMD K6 200 Mhz, 64 Mb, 2Gb) which I would like to use for Internet only. I bought a USB-PCI adapter for it, since I have in Internet connection through USB and the system doesn't have any USB ports. I connected it to a PCI port, Win ME installed the necessary drivers and it rebooted once perfectly but since I rebooted the second time, the computer got stuck every time when trying to update the ESCD. If I remove the USB-PCI card, the boot-up process goes fine, but if I put it back it goes through the same stages: installs drivers and then gets stuck after rebooting, doing the ESCD thing. I've tried changing and then reseting some PCI settings in the BIOS, to no effect. When I reset the settings it boots up once fine, but only once. I'm stuck.

maybe a bios update? Not really sure. I know I once installed a wireless keyboard and mouse on my parent's old system (HP 250 MHz computer). It wouldn't work on their computer. I just assumed some newer technology didn't work with older technology. But now I wonder if a bios update would have fixed it, which is about the only thing I didn't try.

Thanks.
I suppose I'll try that.
However, I am not sure about what chances there are to still find support for hardware this old.
Would you know a site for me to download BIOS updates for really old systems?

My honest opinion would be to not do it as if something gets screwed up, you're screwed. But that's just me, others might have a different opinion.
