Hi, I have what I think is a simple question. Will a SATA hard drive connected via USB2 port with a USB2-to-IDE adapter be any slower than a hard drive directly connected to the motherboard via IDE? thanks.

Yes.
Connecting a hard drive via USB or Firewire will be slower than connecting it with IDE or SATA. From what I've read Firewire is typically faster than USB2.
As for internal connections, there is no real difference in speed between IDE and SATA. SATA allows for a higher bandwidth, but the hard drives have not increased in speed to saturate the additional bandwidth.

Oh, Argh! I got confused. The drive is actually regular old PATA. The only real issue I was wondering about was whether the USB2 was slower than IDE. thanks for your answer!
