USB to parallel printer cable stopped working

Specs: Windows XP
XP SP2 laptop and old but useful Canaon BJ-10SX printer. Having bought and connected the new cable the printer was working fine until I pulled the USB connection out of the laptop, now it will not print. I have reconnected the cable as before - connecting the cable to the laptop first then connect to the printer. I have been through the XP Troubleshooting help and it could not help. The port on laptop is OK as datastick works fine. The cable is OK as the printer works fine when connected to desktop. Self-test on the printer is fine. There are no yellow warnings in device manager. So I am stumped

I think I'd plug it back in as it was and try a restore point to a time before you unplugged it.

I suspect the gizmo changed from lpt1 to maybe lpt2 or some such deal on the re-plug.

I guess it could simply be bad.

You should see it as part of hardware.

A Pit Bull is like a gun you can pet. And there is no safety on it.

I have since run easydriverpro also called driverdetective to check out the drivers
result was as follows
usb printing support driver out of date but more worringly 1 device without a driver (usb device), but i do not know if the usb device is the one connected to the usb to parallel cable. Surely device manager would have indicated that a driver was missing, would it not.
