I have another 40 gig drive which I would like to add to my PC, but not as a slave. As I will be transfering it to another computer to swap data I want it externally. Now instead of buying a USB housing for about £40 I was thinking of going for a simple USB to IDE cable. I know you still need to use the power supply supplied because USB wont power an IDE device, but could I use the cable, and to power it up could I take the power from the computers PSU as normal? Say take an IDE power cable out into the drive, to save the hassle of having another power plug? Then I would obviously use the pwer plug for when I take the drive to the other computer.

USB hard drives should be outlawed!

They suck, they're slow, they overheat and die much quicker than an internal drive.

If you have USB 2.0, Flash USB Drives are now up to 80X speed, do not require external power, portable, last forever and can be thrown across a crowded room to a friend or coworker.

Or you can just buy a USB crossover cable & software for transfering files back & forth.

the best(fastest and easiest) way to transfer files between 2 computers is through 2 ethernet cards(NICs) and a crossover cable(cat5 cable)

other ways are:
laplink cable(goes to each pc's lpt port)
usb crossover cable

the usb cable will run you about $40, the laplink about $20, and the ethernet cards and crossover cable about $20 total

but if you must go for your usb hdd idea
or you could just use the ide cable and leave both cases open which would give you the fastest way of doing this and you wouldnt have to buy anything that you dont already have

what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

hey that works too but then you have to burn the discs which takes 5-6 minutes

and if you exchange data often then that method is a pain in the butt

ta. The point is that the two and possibly 3 PC's are in different locations completely, not in the same building. I was just curious cos Its expensive buying a proper external hard drive, but obviously cheaper buying a usb case for an Internal one.

Maybe I will get one of those IDE carriages for the PC's where you slide the hard drive in and out from the front.
