I'm not sure what's going on with the USB ports. They used to work, but now they don't. I get a USB icon in the systray and when clicked, it brings up a window with the message 'A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should remove the device.' I've removed the device and rebooted, but it still says it's connected and won't let any of the USB ports work. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling all root hubs and USB controllers in Device Manager, but even after a fresh install it immediately comes up with unknown USB devices causing power problems. I've used compressed air to make sure that dust wasn't causing a short in the ports and I've tried plugging in a flash drive, but nothing seems to work. I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

A device may have burned out that USB controller. Most USB controllers have TWO USB ports connected to them. If you have more than TWO USB ports chances are you have more than one controller. Try a different port. I would be cautious about connecting the device that caused the error.

What was that device anyway?

I'm not sure. It's my brother's computer. It was probably a digital camera or an ipod. Also, none of the ports work, front or back. They won't recognize anything that's plugged into them except when they cause the error, and then it's just unknown USB device. There are 6 ports total, 2 in front, 4 in back. How possible is it that it burned out all of the USB controllers? Also, why would it show them as working properly in device manager if they were burned out?

It is probably a software (drivers) issue. Look in Device Manager to see if the USB controllers are installed and working properly.

I agree. With all 6 ports not working I think its highly doubtful all of them got burned out at the same time! Look for drivers there, unroll them, download latest drivers. See if that works.

Also, update the drivers to your motherboard- that may work as well.

Another thing to try, open up the side of the case and more than likely there are usb controllers on the mainboard. Unplug the one going to the front the PC and plug it into a different controller. See if that works. Try this after you've thoroughly looked through the driver issue however.

All root hubs and controllers have been updated, uninstalled and reinstalled, disabled and renebled. Device Manager has said they were working fine from the start. This MB only has one spot to hook up the front USB ports. I've tried rebooting with it disconnected, but it didn't change anything. As for MB drivers, where would I find them?

The motherboard chipset drivers are found at the MBoard manufacturer's website. That is if you have a custom built computer.

For OEM computers you would go to the maker's site.

Just look on your motherboard manufacturer's website. Or look for your chipset developer's website. Should be able to find them there.

Hope this helps...

Ok, I downloaded and reinstalled the chipset drivers. Unfortunatly it didn't change anything. I'm guessing they're just fried. Thanks for the help anyway.
