Depending on the Operating system, in XP, right click my computer, choose the hardware tab then click device manager.
I think we are looking for yellow exclamation points when you open "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". That or some kind of colorful icon that doesn't seem to belong.
A reinstall of the drivers could fix it or if you recently opened the case, I'd check for a connection issue. Sometimes the older machines can develop a crud on the wire connections that connect the USB's or what have you and though they are plugged just fine, un/replugging them can clean the connection enough to get things going.

That would be an extreme case of crud. LOL. Proper maintance inside and outside your tower will pay off in the long run. Be good to your baby and she will be good to you!
Slight correction here right click my computer, properties, choose the hardware tab then click device manager.
