My problem is this one:

I have two USB ports and for some reason they don’t seem to be working. I have connected a USB mouse and a scanner and they are never found. The new hardware is never found.

In Windows 98SE, I have gone to System Properties and Device Manager and looked at the under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and found that I have a SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller then gone to properties and it says, This device is working properly.

The USB Root Hub also says, This device is working properly.

Does anyone know why I can’t get the USB ports to detect my mouse or scanner? I have installed the drivers for the scanner, and the computer does not read the scanner at all.

Would it be possible that my drivers for the USB controllers are corrupt? How do I check if it is a software driver problem or a hardware issue for the USB’s?

I have also tried to plug a lexar flashdrive (thumbdrive) with the appropriate driver software for Windows 98SE into the two USB ports, but the new flashdrive or new hardware dialog box is ever detected?

The HP model is a HP Pavilion 4533. It is a little bugger, but it does the things that I need done.

Thanks in advance for any help. I really need to be able to use the thumb drive.

Hi,

Delete all USB entries in Device Manager.

Reboot and let Windows detect the chipset again and re-install the chipset drivers for your motherboard.

Are the USB ports integrated into the back of the MBoard or fed from a MB header to front or rear case connections. If the header type, the ports may not actually be connected to the controller, or could be connected improperly. What you see in Device manager is that the CONTROLLER is working properly. Most MBoards have a mix of both kinds mentioned.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I went to the www.usbman.com and did some of the recommendations.

I installed the windows patch and also went into safe mode to delete some “ghost” devices or duplicate names.

I was able to delete one device, but I have one named motherboard resources that appears 4 times. I can delete it, but it is detected 4 times as new hardware. I am not sure if this is what is causing my problem.

OtheHill I am not sure about the type USB ports but they are not PCI slots.

I assume that buying a new PCI card with a couple of USB’s ports would solve my problem quicker, but I would like to solve this problem without paying some money.

Thanks for the help.

Are the jacks actually part of the backplane of the Motherboard?
