hi
i posted here a little while ago about a toshiba laptop i bought off ebay, and it has a startup password on it.
now, i've read around that there are parallel port password removers, but this unit has no parallel port. i've also read about usb port password remover keys. i've ssen how to make a parallel one, but does anyone know how to make a usb one?
if you do, send the instructions to this thread or email me at winnt7(at)gmail(dot)com

before anyone asks... no, i did not steal the laptop. i bought it off ebay. if you'd like, go to the original auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...
and send the buyer, be300x (aka me) a message, and i'll respond. No try! Do. Or do not. There is no try.

It is doubtful anything like that would help you since the USB device won't be initiated until the system is booted and the bootup password is required before the system will go any further. We don't doubt you purchased the machine however the legitimacy of the seller's ownership has to come into question if that party cannot provide you with the bootup password that would have been needed every time they used the machine. You have two choices. Send the system to an authorised Toshiba tech to have the password unlocked, or purchase a replacement motherboard. Of course you knew from the description on ebay that the seller didn't know the password. that should have been enough of a warning to leave it alone.
Caveat EmptorI used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Hee's a link to some answers, unfortunately, NOT the one you're looking for.
Some good info here never-the-less. At least they give prices upFront for parts and services. Also clear instructions on what needs to be done and what they can and cannot do.
Your Toshiba Portage has neither Paralell nor USB solutions.
Good luck.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Richard59 is correct.
Buying such a machine with no viable password bypass solution in mind -- especially from fleabay -- is inherently impetuous. In nearly all cases, what the buyer ends up getting is a piece of equipment that's no better than a boat anchor in the long run.
Live & Learn!

dammit.
well, after some research, and closer inspection of the device, i've noticed that the machine had a sticker on it that wasn't a serial number sticker.
it looked like a company or business sticker.
it has a phone number on it for the "Dendrite Helpdesk" and a name "Aimee Davenport"
........
my guess is that the machine was stolen, course, i should've thought of that before i bought it.
heck, the machine was originally purchased in march 2005, maybe if i contact that company, they could give me the password. i have proof that i'm not the one who stole it, and that i just got wound up in this situation.
i'll give it a try.
No try! Do. Or do not. There is no try.

....ROFL
I am sure if you bought a stolen car with no keys, the real owner would be real enthused to hand you the keys at the drop of a hat, if you can prove you are not the car thief.

See things like system rescue cd, and ultimate bootcd UBCD4WIN. They have password reset apps that can run from live cd or even be used if you have admin. If you need the admin use ophcrack live cd.
Worse comes to worse you could see the toshiba site for that model. It may say how to remove a battery to clear cmos or move a jumper.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Looks like they're in Canada:

Or maybe Virginia with Corporate based in Joisey. :)

Life's more painless for the brainless.

that's exactly what i found. i called that number and they are in virginia.
i can prove that i didn't steal it, and a theif wouldn't go back to the owner asking for the password: but i would.
plus, the unit is from 2005. would they really mind? i paid $90 for a device that i couldn't possibly know that it was stolen.
we'll see how this works out ;-)
No try! Do. Or do not. There is no try.

what if it turns out it WAS stolen from Aimee Davenport and she wanted it back? would you give it back?

maybe wasnt stolen, heehee
