Comment:

I did a fresh install and my usb port doesn't recognize any
usb devices. But if I plug in a usb wireless dongle, it has a
light showing power is getting to it, but still it is not
recognized
Does anyone know how to rectify this problem as there is
only 1 usb port on this laptop. I am not interested in
getting a pcmia usb card as I use that slot for my wireless
Thanks

Only thing I can think of is drivers. Does everything look OK in device manager?

could try booting from a live linux cd, like puppy. If it works, then at least you will know it's not a hardware problem.

Did you install motherboard chipset drivers?

You didn't clarify if the "fresh install" was done via a HP restore set or from a WinXP CD.

If from a XP CD then you probably need to install chipset drivers.
