Hi,
I have an Asus P4P800 and windows XP. When I plug in my Canon s330 with the USB cable, XP does not recognize that a new hardware has been added. When I connect the same camera with the same wire to other computers, XP recognizes the additional hardware (by name).
What can be the problem?-nuj

Have you tried it in all of your USB ports on the Asus? Next have you tried another piece of USB hardware in the ports. If you get no response from either, check in the BIOS that USB is enabled.

Check that your USB controller is enabled within the bios.
Do you have other usb devices connected as wel ? If so which USB ports are you trying to use, are they connected correctly to the mother board ?
Check these things first than repost with results.
Good luck

Hi,
If the camera or cables are USB 2 then you need Win XP SP1 for USB 2.
Other possible issue is power, your computer may not have enough power on the USB bus to power the camera. Try a powered USB 2 hub and cables.

Hi,
Thank you all for your responses, but my problem still exists. Here's a bit more info:
-I am running XP SP1.
-
-I currently have a USB mouse and printer connected to 2 of my 4 USB ports. Both are directly connected to the MB and work fine.
-I tried the camera in all four USB ports without any change.
-I went into BIOS under Usb Configuration. Here is what it says:
USB Function: 4 USB Ports
Legacy USB Support: Auto
USB 2.0 Controller: Enabled
USB Controler Mode: HiSpeed
-At the top of this BIOS screen, it says
USB Devices Enabled - 1 Mouse
(Shouldn't my printer also be here?)Could this mean I need a BIOS update? I didnt think so.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I think you have few people here scratching their heads at the moment, me included.
This is not normal, the thing works on other rigs but it will not work on yours, that is a bit strange.
What appears in the bios is not important, the fact your USB controler is eanbled is the most important part.
Doeas that camera have any additinal drivers that need to be loaded first ?
Have a read at your manual again especialy in the mother board setup area just in case there is some starnge refrence to usb configuration that we dont know about.
Check the bios version you have when the comp boots and you get the post screen, than check what other versions are available from asus and update it.
Use the auto update tool for the bios that asus have supplied you. You will find it on the mother board support disk.
In the mean time I will do some research on your camera and board to see if I can see something out of the ordinary.
Good luck

Hi,
I looked at the BIOS updates available, but none of them have anything to do with the USB. My camera does not use USB 2.0, so I am sure that is not the problem. Thanks again for all your help. Please let me know what else you think I can do to fix this problem.-nuj

I am having the same problem. When I first got my computer, I plugged my camera in the USB port, XP found the camera and I transfered the pics. I have since installed two more USB devices. Now my XP will not recognize that the camera is plugged in. I have tried it in all four USB ports with no luck. My printer, mouse, and palm work just fine. But no luck with the camera. I am out of ideas... Any help?

I had a similar problem (in mine, USB knew something was plugged in, and sometimes could even retrieve the label 'Canon S200', but then would fail to be able to use the device). In my case, I had to install the appropriate WIA drivers from Canon.
In 2002, a clean install of XP did not require any WIA updates to make my Canon s200 work, now, in 2004, suddenly a clean install of XP SP1 requires me to separately install the WIA drivers. I find that odd...
Anyway, you can try to download the WIA drivers and see if that does anything for you: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=OSCompatibilityAct&fcategoryid=113&keycode=windr
