usb mouse works with ps/2 adapter but not usb

Specs: Windows XP, AMD 3500+
Why does my usb mouse work when i use the ps/2 adapter? But when i use it as usb it keeps shutting off?

Can the usb part of the mouse be compromised but still work as ps/2? This is just odd.

I've turned off the power shut off command in devices in ctrl panel already but the usb mouse keeps shutting off. If it shuts off I need to plug it in again for it to work.

What is the deal?

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you're using the ps2 adapter and unplugging it and plugging it back in to usb while the system is running, it won't work. You need to reboot the system for windows to pick up the usb mouse.

what? no ..

When i use the mouse with usb it won't work. I have to use the ps2 adapter to get the mouse to work.

How did you not understand that?

When i do have the mouse connected with usb, it shuts off after a period for no reason.

Is the mouse faulty or is my usb ports faulty? If the mouse can work in ps/2 mode does that mean its my usb ports? come on guy...

Does the usb port work with other devices? If it does, it's not the usb port. Mice are cheap and not always made very well. The ps/2 capability could work and the usb connection could be faulty. Try a different mouse. I've had brand new mice that didn't work. Sorry for my ignorance and lack of interpretation. I'm going to get my wife to spank me now for being a dumb boy :)
