I'm trying to use a USB mouse on this particular computer. The mouse works fine, because it works in my other XP box.

What happens, is that I plug the mouse in, Windows recognizes it, and can move the cursor for about a second, then it locks up. No error message, nuttin'.

have you tried plugging it into a different USB port? How about trying a USB hub?

Yup, tried all six ports (4 x 1.1, 2 x 2.0).
