My family has a Windows XP computer and our Dell optical mouse is freezing up every few minutes. The cursor just refuses to move (although the mouse light is on, and responds to us moving it around), and the only ways to get it back working are
1) restarting the computer
2) unplugging and replugging the mouse, and
3) going into the Device Manager and disabling/re-enabling the USB Human Interface Device (there's no yellow sign next to it by the way, and says its functioning normally).
This is a new thing, it's frozen up on us very rarely before, but it's started being more and more prevalent in the past few days. I've tried updating the drivers (Windows didn't find any updates, and switching to Logitech drivers didn't work). I've tried Windows Update, I've tried cleaning the mouse. I've done an anti-spyware and anti-virus scan. I've tried switching the mouse from one USB port to another. Nothing's helped.
The freezing is not entirely random, it appears to happen when we play games, or watch videos, or anything else that's CPU intensive (or is it memory intensive? I dunno). When I browse e-mails or read the news, it freezes maybe once an hour, but when my brother plays a game, it locks up once every five minutes or so.
We don't want to buy a new mouse unless absolutely necessary, as evidenced by us still having XP, we're a little on the poor side at the moment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you :)
