I've been thinking of going from Cable to ADSL due mainly to my contract expiring with the Cable Company. So now I've gone from a 20gig to a 3gig dl per Mth plan which really sucks.
ADSL 256/64 Unlimited plans look pretty good, but I am wondering if the cheeper USB Modems are inferior to the Ethernet Modems and if so by how much, and would the USB Modem effect my LAN D/L speeds?

If the USB is USB 2.0 then you probably will see no difference, I have a Cable Modem, which I used on USB 2.0 for months, but a bought a new motherboard which came with Ethernet built in so I decided to plug my modem into the Ethernet port and did not see any difference in speed
Ethernet is better as it has it's own resources while USB 1.1 or 2.0 need to use your CPU and your memory to keep it going
