I origionaly posted this under the WinXP forums but know belive it to be a general hardware issue so ive posted it here with some extra info.
In short it recgonizes the player and installs the drivers, shows me the files but won't let me read/write/delete etc... Both linux and windows dont work so its not a driver issue. and the player works on a diffrent comp fine.
Here is a more descriptive explination of the problem taken from my previous post with areas modified now that i tried it under linux with the same problem.
I recently got myself a USB memory stick/MP3 player however when i try and access it under Windows XP it freezes windows explorer or whatever i am trying to use to access it (command prompt etc). When i insert it i get a it i get a "Safley Remove Hardware" icon in the taskbar and it opens up an explorer window showing the files on the device however the window quickly stops responding. And will only go away by ctrl+alt+del and end processing it or by removing the device. Somtimes i get a error message along the line of the device failed to do whatever because of an I/O error. Works fine on my other computer also with Windows XP, SP1. All drivers are the inbuild XP ones on both machines. The rest of the USB stuff on my comp is working fine i have tried disabeling the other usb controlers and only using the one with the mp3 player connected to it but it still doesn't work so i don't think its a power issue.
Under Universial Serial Bus controllers in device manager I have:
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Printing Support
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root HubI googled it and only from some stuff relating to having usb2.0 causing similar problems with windows 2000. I was going to disable the USB2.0 hub but i carn't find it in the list. I have 3 diffrent USB1 connections (with 2 ports each) which seem to relate to the diffrent "USB Root Hub" entries and 1 USB2.0 (also 2 ports) which doesn't appear in the list so i wounder if it could be related. unfortunatly i carn't test the 2.0 as i have no 2.0 devices.
I have also tried it under knoppix MiB linux. Knoppix dumps an error messages to the active console "SCSI disk error : host 1 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 70000 I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 44" with the sector number going up by 2-5 each time. I'm not sure if this is the reading problems or if these are bad sectors cause by me trying to get it working under windows. When i try and mount the drive it just stops responding (I can alt+f# to a diffrent console or press enter and it goes down a linebut no prompt or error message shows up and ctrl+c doesn't work)

Try updating the drivers for your motherboard's AMD chipset.
USB problems are often rectified by a mobo driver update.Good luck

I hope my experience does not relate to yours at all.
I recently purchased an mp3/flashdrive from cendyne. I was pissed to read in the instructions that the device can only be accessed through the provided software.
There was a warning that said formatting the drive through windows explorer "may render it unusable."

Yeh my drive isn't suposed to be formatted however if it is there is a program to fix it. The software that comes with the drive is realy only an explorer interface in a program so it has the exact same problem. But anyhow the drive itself is working fine, its got to be somthing to do with the mobo or usb setup.
