Boot into the BIOS screens to verify the setting for Legusy USB devices is Enabled. This setting allows USB KBoards to function while in the Pre Windows startup screens. If you have no such listing in the Bios then your KBoard will not work before Windows. That condition can be a problem at times.
Many MSoft KBoards have both types of connections. If the Keyboard comes with a PS/2 tail or a PS/2 adapter, I suggest you use it. PS/2 is more reliable for the KBoard anyway. It will also keep one more USB port free. Be sure to use the adapter that comes with the KBoard.

If you want to use usb devices frequently, and you have usb 1.1, if possible consider installing an add-on usb2 card.
usb2 is much (around 12x) faster than usb 1.1 and it is backwards compatible.
Here in the UK such a card with 4 external plus 1 internal ports costs about £9.
Makes a huge difference if an ipod etc. is in use.
You may find the proposed k/b, if usb2, does not work when connected to a usb1 port. Can you borrow one and try?
