Hi guys. I have a problem which is really driving me up the wall and was hoping you could help me please.

I have a 7-port USB hub plugged into one of the USB ports on the back of my motherboard. My motherboard is an Intel D865GBFL Desktop Board.

When I plug the hub into the motherboard, I get a balloon tip saying "USB Device Not Recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

After following the instructions when I click the balloon, it still does not work. I have tried all I can think of, even what the Troubleshooter suggested.

Also, I have tried powering the hub from the mains instead of the USB port. It didn't solve the problem.

I would like this issue to be resolved because almost all of my hardware is USB and I simply don't have enough ports.

Thanks in advance.

In my experience, USB hubs (cheap or expensive) have NEVER lived up to their expectations.

I can't tell you how many I have tried and they ALL have failed in one way or another.

Even if you get them working, speed is severely restricted to the point of being useless anyway.

Hardware manufacturers of external HDD's as well as optical drives will strongly advise against the use of hubs and warn of data corruption if it is attempted.

In short, hubs are useless, and you are better off purchasing another USB interface card if you want your system to be at all reliable.

You mean like a PCI card with USB ports on it?

blackbill could be rite but...I guess I must be lucky that my Berklin USB 2.0 4-port Hub have consistently serviced me very well since 2003 and still is...

The more I think of it, the more I believe that the only reason my hub is working well is because it's self-powered.

Col,

I strongly recommend that you read the paragraph entitled "Avoid USB power crises" that was published in this August 2005 issue of PC World.

My hub is already self-powered.
