Subject: USB - how do I access?OS: XP ProCPU/Ram: C2D E6400 2GB CosairModel/Manufacturer: Custom |
Comment: Hey guys I am having a problem with my USB ports. about a week ago when I first plugged my camera into my USB port it worked. Now everytime I plug my camera in or a USB SD Reader it will make the usb noise that's famous haha and then it doesn't auto play or do anything. I double click on my computer but it does not show up in there. In device manager I uninstalled it and plugged it back into a different USB port and it goes through the steps of auto detecting it and installing it and then in the corner it says "your hardware is installed and ready to use" but still I do not get an auto play and it does not show up in my computer. Can someone please tell me why it's not showing up or how do I access it if it's not auto playing or showing up in my computer. Is there some option I have to enable? I am running XP Pro SP2 and my specs are in sig, Thanks NovakAntec 900 Gaming Case Xinfinity SLI 500W PSU EvGA Nvidia 680i SLI Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Cosair 2 x 1GB DDR2800 EvGA Nvidia 7900GT 2 Seagate 320GB Sata 3GB/s Raid 0

Reply: (edit)I believe it should only show "storage drives". I have used this tool in the paste and I just plug in a jump drive and then click on that usb drive and then click on fix. This has always for me then fixed any usb devices not showing an auto play dialog box.

Reply: (edit)I'll try it on my USB drive and see if it shows up but my camera does list as a Mass storage device in device manager so it should show up on that list too. Reply: (edit)The problem here is beyond autoplay, since the device is also not listed in "my computer" on the OPs machine. Have you checked the device manager from safe mode? Sometimes, devices are inappropriately enumerated and are very often "exclaimed" in the device manager - give it a go.

Reply: (edit)Ah, I didn't realize you weren't able to see any of your usb devices. Check the bios to make sure the onboard usb is not disabled. If you have the time, boot to a live linux cd or install windows on different hard drive to see if usb works. If it does then there is some conflict with you current windows setup. Did you check device manager like sabertooth said?

Reply: (edit)Try this: A USB device, such as a camera, scanner, or printer, loses its connection and stops working unexpectedly. The USB device works when Windows starts but later stops working. Disable power management on the USB hub With some devices, Window XP tries to disable USB when a device is not used. Windows XP does this to save power. This may not work under many circumstances and may cause the USB devices to fail to wake up when called. To fix this problem, use the following steps: 1. Click Start, and right-click My Computer. 2. Click Properties, then click Hardware. 3. Click Device Manager. 4. Double-click Universal Serial Bus Controllers. 5. Right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties. 6. Click Power Management. 7. Unselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. 8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 for each USB Root Hub. 9. Click OK, and close Device Manager.
