I know what is USB external HD but what exactly is this? Does it function the same way as external USB HD? Can it be used to archive files?

It's quite similar and you should be able to archive your files as far as I can see.

This appears to be basically a laptop harddrive usb to ide cable and a case, all of which can be bought separately on ebay

I have one of these and it works perfectly BUT there is one catch. It is powered off the USB slot and it will not work off the front USB ports. on my work Compaq, (it gives a little hunting noise.)but it does work off the rear USB ports. I can only assume the front ports do not have the necessary power to spin it up. Can't think why but be aware.

Bob.
