I have wiped this PC out, reloaded the OS (XP) including SP3. Everytime I plug in a USB device, the machine crashes. I have tried to locate newer, better drivers, but haven't had any sucess. I have been to Gateway's website (no help). I believe the board is MSI (MS-7173P), but no luck there either. Almost everything says that SP2 or 3 should correct it, but it didn't. What should I do?

Have you installed the chipset drivers. If not, download them and install them. Also, update the BIOS to the latest version.

Thanks. I downloaded the Chipset when I reloaded it. I will try the BIOS. When I first installed XP, it was the basic version & I had a yellow exclamation point on the USB controller. When I inserted the USB flash drive, the machine beeped, but said it wasn't recognized & I couldn't see it in the Windows Explorer. Then I installed SP2. It didn't change it. When I installed SP3, the exclamation point went away, but the hanging started. The mouse or keyboard doesn't respond. I have to shut it down with the power button. If the USB is in stalled, it won't even come up.

MS-7173P motherboard

You need to go to the AMD/ATI site & download the drivers for the Xpress 200 & also the southbridge chipset drivers
