Usb Drive Works everywhere But on laptop

September 17, 2012 at 11:41:30
Specs: Windows 7 Upgrade from Vista, 4GB DDR2
I have a laptop that has had the usb ports stop working. the drive works in all other computers, and works when the laptop is booted to linux, however in windows 7 on the laptop it keeps telling me that the drive is not formatted and is RAW. does not matter what drive I use, all are RAW. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers. (no errors in Device Manager).

All drives and ports affected on this laptop
Drives work fine in any other computer
The drives work fine in linux boot

Tried updating, all Drivers, firmware, bios, re-formatting,
Computer Management wont let me access the drive (or assign drive letter) and is showing RAW format

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE DRIVE, It must be windows 7, but i have tried everything to get it to work and still RAW file system. HELP

Try uninstalling all the "USB root hubs" (NOT the USB host controllers) in Device Manager >> USB Serial Bus controllers

Right-click each USB root hub in turn and choose "Uninstall" for each one.

Then restart Windows & it will re-install them.

Boot to the windows dvd and see if you can attempt a restore from the usb. I only mean attempt this just go through the steps up to some restore. Actually there is no restore points on this usb so it can't bork anything.

Since it works on linux, I suspect the ports to be correct. I also hope you have the usb device formatted as a windows format and not ext2 or such.

Guess you could try a restore point.Pretty easy test.

most drives that i have tried are NTFS, some FAT32, and a couple ext2. I did do a system restore, and a windows repair both did not change anything with the usb.

The hardware and ports are fine cause they work on linux boot
Usb's are good cause they work on other machines just fine
Right now I am thinking that somewhere in the windows registry is an error on how the drives are initialized.
