USB drive detected, NOT recognized

When I tried connecting my Hitachi external drive (USB1.1), Windows displays that the "USB Device is Not Recognized" and the Device Manager lists the item under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "Unknown Device". When I check the item Properties, Device Status is "No drivers are installed for this device".
I verified that the external drive is OK by plugging it into another machine (USB2). That machine detected it fine, and listed it correctly as another external drive.
Does anyone know why this is? From searching on the net i get to know that USB 1.2 is forward-compatible with USB 2. Also WinXP SP2 should detect it and provide the necessary drivers for it. So why my system is detecting the device but not recognizing it?

I dont know if yours is the same mate, but when I install service pack 2, the usb drivers arn't automatically installed, what I do is go to device manager and select the Universal Serial Bus Controller, update/install the drivers from there, it should find a driver within windows.

I did that...but still XP is displaying it as a Unknown device. Moreover, I used it on another machine, that machine detected it fine (although it needs to be formatted). I am still puzzeled why my machine refuse to recognize it since both. Can it be the version on USB ?
