USB drive dead?

I just got an 8 gig sony usb drive and it was working well for a little while, then it started to mess up - i would copy something to it but it would not show up as copied even though the the size left indicated it was on the drive. Therefore i tried to format the drive via various means and got nowhere. Instead the drive now shows 0 bytes of free space and 0 bytes of used space. It also prompts me to "insert a disk into drive G:" Is it still possible to recover the drive? I do not care about the information on it, just the drive itself. I was told to use killdisk, but when my drive is in the USB port and i run killdisk, it states "Device is not ready!"
Please, anyone with any idea, information that could help me I would really appreciate it! Thank you very very much!
