Hey all,
I have just finished installing XP on a brand new out of the box Vostro 1510. blew away the vista install from dell without ever even booting into it.
My problem is I have all drivers from Dell's site except for one left: "USB device" with the infamous little yellow flag in Device manager.
There is nothing externally connected to this machine to need any extra driver so it is something onboard. The only hardware driver I didn't bother with from Dell's driver site is for a modem. I don't know why they list two modem driver possibilities for a machine (or a series of Vostro machines) that DO NOT HAVE MODEMS. But alas, perhaps that is my next step just to see what else could be looking for a "USB device" to appease the Device Manager Gods.
By the way, I am very unimpressed by the most recent changes Dell made to the Vostro laptop line all shy of one HUGE improvement: they finally got a clue and ditched that doggone MediaDirect crap and that bloomin' button for it. I rebuilt my brothers Vostro 1500 and had to remap the command for that button to just start up Firefox instead of MediaDirect. Pretty slick and handy a hack, but inconvenient to have to do.
But the new line isn't built half as rugged as the former. That Vostro 1500 that I saw of my brothers right from Dell was built like a tank. I wouldn't be surprised if you could run over it with your truck at a construction site and it'd live. these new ones are flimsy in comparison. :(
Plus, they don't LATCH closed but instead just use the pressure of the hinge to stay closed. another inconvenience. Thanks! :)

First question is why didn't you just buy that model with WinXP pre-installed. It is offered that way on their website.
That said, All the XP drivers should be available on the Dell site.
Just run your service tag at the site and see what hardware comes up. Then download the XP equivalent, assuming there is one.

The driver you are looking for is the Bluetooth driver. If you go to Dell's website it is under the "Network" category called "Wireless 360 Module with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR".
Here is a direct link to the driver download:

I would very much like to know how to install XP as I want to do the same on my son's laptop.
Did you have to change the hard drive mode to SATA in the BIOS and then do a standard XP install or do you need an XP with slipstreamed AHCI drivers?
If it was the first then can you install the drivers in Windows and change ATA mode back again? Is there any downside of sticking with SATA mode?
