I have a compaq presario, the USB port became loose and now no longer works. I get an error, "usb malfunctioned.." so I bought a cheap pcmcia usb cardbus adapter. It has four USB ports and it came with a cable with a DC end, like a small power plug for a phone or something, onthe other end, it's male usb. What is this cord for? Is it for power or what?

I'm wondering if the cord is effectivly an extension cord to the USB p0rt or if the cord just supplies power to the pcmcia cardbus.

I have a d-link ethernet adapter, that plugs into my usb port, but since it broke, I thought maybe this adapter would work for me, but all I get is lights.. I plug in my ethernet or my mp3 player and they both light up, but I get no response from the computer.. I could pull the cardbuss out and the lights on the stuff plugged into the usb ports remains on, because the cord is still plugged in.. but why isn't my pc recognizing my device?

I give up.

I looked at over 15 different devices and couldn't find one like you describe. So unless you provide us with a model number and a maker, I don't think anyone is going to be able to help you.
