They're to 'Jumper two host devices or hubs together without adaptors or gender changers':

Interestingly, this:

http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5

says that directly connecting 2 PCs together with a regular USB cable can damage them.

There are special USB cables (adapters) that will connect two computers. The following is an example:

Whatever A to A is used for it is not used for my computer! The Radio Shack salesman sold me a 10 foot A to B cable ($33) and an Adapter ($10) to make the B end back into A. When I got home I discovered that the A to B cable was all I needed formy HP laserjet printer. Needless to say i took back the A to B adapter and got my $10 back. Btw I saw another 10 foot A to B cable at walmart for $15 (not gold plated).
