Hi how do I find out which usb ports are usb 2.0? When I plug either a card reader or whatever in the usb ports it says that the device would work faster in a version 2.o port. I tried all of them and I get the same message.

Open Device Manager and click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If you do not see "Enhanced" Controller listed, you do not have USB2.0 in any of your USB ports.

If you tried them all & get the same message from each, chances are your motherboard doesn't support USB 2.0. If you need it, you'll have to install a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card.

While the above responses are correct there could be other reasons for USB 2.0 not to be available, even if the controllers are available. First, you must be using SP1 or later. Second, the MBoard chipset drivers need to be installed. Best to check your computer manual to see if USB 2.0 should be there.

Ah yes things I thought I should do. I did think of it the day after I posted this but I have been busy with a court case.
Oh btw I asked the former owner of the machine and she said she did have a pci usb card installed but she thought that some of the onboard usb slots were usb2.0. I did point out to her that the drivers for the MB etc were needed and for some reason she didn't know that. Maybe she got the machine from someone else and hasn't had a new machine. My main box I bought new so I still have the original drivers disk for everything whereas every other machine I have ever had has been 2nd hand. She formatted the machine and reinstalled windows on it before giving it to me. Thanks so much!"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

I got the drivers for everything from the manufacturers website and everything is working well now.

Yes it is always good to close the thread and let people know that there is a resolution to a problem.

Hmmmm I am not sure that this is still a problem. For some reason when I plug in the tv tuner box(Leadtek winfast usb II deluxe) it still has that error but the device works. The error is not there when I plug in a usb hub. Anyway here is what i got when I went into device manager as xpuser suggested. I also don't see the 'enhanced' as mentioned.

Below is a link to the correct drivers for your USB chipset. However when running WinXP you shouldn’t need to install any additional drivers. Are you running SP2? The second link below is to another thread here at CN.

Yep it has sp2.
Maybe I am thinking that I would have to maybe go into the properties and update the driver? Then direct the update to a folder or file where I put the driver? Because I remember doing that amoungst others like for the MB etc?
I looked ont hat first link and I am a bit confused as to what I donwload and install? I guess the first one as it is the latest? I downloaded it but will wait until you tell me if I am supposed to go through the 'update driver' procedure or not.
Trying to think where I got the driver that I thought I installed......can't remember. I know I have it burnt on a cd but I just had some major problems with my linux box and problems with the dvd drive so I don't feel like searching right now.
I see what you mean that 2nd link says that the driver is in sp1 so I should have it."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

What is the date of the current driver? The second link on CN indicates the OP there had a driver dated 2001.

The driver that is installed right now says 1.7.2001 abd version 5.1.2600.2180.
I just had a thought. maybe those ports are not working correctly as my other machine started out with that error with the front of the box usb ports and now they just don't work at all."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

If they were working and now are not, try removing them from within Device Manager and rebooting. Windows should sort things out on reboot.
You do understand that there is more than one USB controller on your MBoard?

Well the ports were always working but there was that thing that would pop up that would say to connect to another port and that it would run faster that way. I can't remember the wording exactly. That was like that when I got the machine from my friend as she had not installed any of the drivers that do with the machine at all. She just installed winxp with sp2 and that was all.
So is each usb controller for each usb port? There are 4 usb ports(on board) for this machine. I gather by that image I posted that two are usb2 and two are usb1? Is that right?
Just guessing."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

Normally there are TWO USB ports per controller. When vendors started selling all manner of USB devices the MBoard manufacturers had to scramble to get more port anboard. The solution was a mix of the old with the new.
Current MBoards have ALL USB 2.0 controllers. I would guess that your MBoard has ONE USB 2.0 with the ports part of the MBoard. The other port is a header on the MBoard that wires are connected to and that would feed EITHER the front or rear of the case. So the front case ports or any rear case brackets (down where cards go) will be USB 1.1.

I don't have any front usb ports on that machine and no pci cards ones so does that mean that mine should all be usb 2.0?
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

No, the motherboard header I mentioned allows you to connect an additional 2 ports per header.
All I meant when I mentioned cards is that there are brackets that install down in that area and connect to a header. These are not PCI cards. They just occupy the same space in the case.
Without more infromation about your motherboard I can't say if you have a mix of USB or all of one kind or the other. The mere fact that you saw a message indicating you could connect faster doesn't necessarily mean you have USB 2.0 on your system now.
Download and run SIW.exe and then post the model of your motherboard. Find SIW below. Get the standalone version.

Ok I don't know what a header is so I won't be able to understand that. Trying to understand sorry but not there yet.
Ok that program says that the MB is D850MD. Seems a good program. I had some program like this years ago but forgot what it was called."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

Do you have a store bought computer like a Dell, Compaq, HP, Geteway, Etc.?
Similiar programs are Belarc, Aida 32, Everest.

No. I got this from a friend and she bought it some time ago. There is nothing on the ouside saying a brand.
Ah yes I have used Belarc and Aida 32.
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

Aida 32 was replaced by Everest. Everest development has been suspended. Both those programs still work but if you have hardware newer than what was available at the last update little info will be produced.
SIW is fairly contemporary so you will generally get more comprehensive results.
Below is a link to your MBOard specs and other info. I am including an excerpt from the specs. This kind of indicates your board may be USB 1.1 only. This would be based on what revision of the board you have. A sister board which is a full ATX as opposed to your mATX board dows have USB 2.0 capability.
Look in SIW for more info on your hardware. Look for the controllers listed below. their presence would indicate you have USB 2.0 capability.
"Support for USB 2.0 devices. The USB 2.0 option supports up to five USB ports
and is currently available only on the D850MV board. It uses the following
components:
•NEC PD720100 USB 2.0 host controller
•SMSC LPC47M132 LPC bus I/O controller
The USB 1.1 ports routed through the ICH2 are not available with the USB 2.0
option".

I am looking under Hardware>Universal serial bus controllers and not seeing anything like what you mentioned above.
