first, I am using an ASUS P4S800 mb with a P4. I don't think any other stats are relevant to the problem.

I just built this PC yesterday, and everything seems to be okay, except for the USB 2.0 ports. Windows detects their existence and installs drivers, but they give no power to devices--not even when booting up. I went through all of my BIOS, and they are Enabled in all places. I installed special USB 2.0 drivers, but still, they receive no power. The USB peripherals I'm trying to use are working: I tried them in another computer, and they are fine. In Device Manager, under my USB Root Hub, it says there is 500 mA per port available for power. There are no orphaned devices. I have a 420 watt power supply, and it's working just fine with everything else. Nevertheless, no power is dispersed.

I don't think there are any jumpers to activate/deactivate Onboard USB, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't see anything in the manual about it, anyway.

I also tried removing all USB devices in Windows and rebooting, to reinstall drivers, which also did not work. I really do not think this is a software problem.

Does anyone have a possible resolution? Or perhaps certain that the motherboard is malfunctioning, and not something due to my ignorance? Also, any kind of special power connectors that need to be attached on the motherboard (though, once again I've read through my manual). I didn't even know there was a special Pentium 4 power connector until yesterday.

Thanks in advance.

Which drivers are being installed? Microsoft or Chipset vendor off of a MB disk. Whichever it is, try the other ones. Don't shortchange your abilities. You sound competent to me. These kinds of issues are usually product wide. I would check with Asus under FAQ and Microsoft also. I know of one case where even tech support for Epox couldn't get all the USB ports working when a modem was installed. When you remove USB devices in windows are you removing all reference to USB or just the devices? Try all.

First off, make sure the extra USB ports are controlled by a jumper or in BIOS.

Also, make sure that the stripe on the USB cable going to the mobo is lined up with pin 1 on the connector on the mobo.

Follow up to Leo2K7:

The "back" USB ports are built on to your motherboard, the "front" connectors are attached to the mobo via a cable. If this cable is not connected, or if they are plugged in backwards to the board, they will not work.

Again, make sure if you need change a jumper on the motherboard to activate these extra ports, or if it is controlled in the BIOS setup.
