first, I am using an ASUS P4S800 mb with a P4. I don't think any other stats are relevant to the problem.
I just built this PC yesterday, and everything seems to be okay, except for the USB 2.0 ports. Windows detects their existence and installs drivers, but they give no power to devices--not even when booting up. I went through all of my BIOS, and they are Enabled in all places. I installed special USB 2.0 drivers, but still, they receive no power. The USB peripherals I'm trying to use are working: I tried them in another computer, and they are fine. In Device Manager, under my USB Root Hub, it says there is 500 mA per port available for power. There are no orphaned devices. I have a 420 watt power supply, and it's working just fine with everything else. Nevertheless, no power is dispersed.
I don't think there are any jumpers to activate/deactivate Onboard USB, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't see anything in the manual about it, anyway.
I also tried removing all USB devices in Windows and rebooting, to reinstall drivers, which also did not work. I really do not think this is a software problem.
Does anyone have a possible resolution? Or perhaps certain that the motherboard is malfunctioning, and not something due to my ignorance? Also, any kind of special power connectors that need to be attached on the motherboard (though, once again I've read through my manual). I didn't even know there was a special Pentium 4 power connector until yesterday.
Thanks in advance.
