Subject: USB 2.0 not funtioning as USB 2.0.
OS: Windows Vista Home Premiu
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlon64 4000+ 2.40GH
Model/Manufacturer: HP/Pavilion a1547c
Comment:
My computer has 7 USB ports, all of them are USB 2.0. They do not fuction as usb 2.0 ports, they only work as usb 1. I have tried opening the computer and unplugging the usb from the motherboard, and replacing it with a new usb 2.0. That did not work. Before i replaced it, I unplugged all the usb ports from the motherboard, turned the pc on, went into device manager and uninstalled all usb ports. Then i turned it off, plugged in the new one, turned the pc back on and it was installed as a enhanced usb port, but did not function as one. This computer has had this problem for 8 months now, and i havent needed to have it fixed until now, because my other pc was stolen. Please help me.

Thank you.

Are you sure that the device you are connecting to the Enhanced USB port is a USB 2.0 device?

How are you determining the port is not USB 2.0?

Thank you for your post.

i have tried using my flash memory cards, and they are unbelieveably slow, and a message pops up saying "this device can perform faster if you connect it to a high-speed usb 2.0 port." Also, i have tried using my Zune media player, and it says the same thing. My printer and my camera say the same also.

Look for updated drivers on the HP site. It sounds like a driver issue. Your USB ports are supported as part of the MBoard chipset drivers.

Look at the link below. There is reference to a Windows update that addresses your problem.

What shows under USB in device Manager? Any yellow ! or ?

Check this link, AMD Athlon processors (some) have USB issues. Don't recall which ones but found references on this Web site. Hope this helps.

have you tried reformating your pc? could be corruption within the OS, because you stated it was working up until 8 months ago.

ok. i have formatted the pc and installed windows xp directly from the cd. That didnt work. I formatted and installed vista from the cd. didnt work. I took the cpu (amd athlon 3700+ 2.20gh) from my pc that the usb ports worked on, and put it in the broken pc. That didnt work either. So, is it a problem with my motherboard? thats the only thing i think i havent fixed.

I kind of doubt it is a MBoard problem. I would guess it is a driver problem. If the ports work in the slower mode they aren't broken.

You never stated if you have USB controllers that are listed as Enhanced. Not familiar with Vista but I am assumming things are like WinXP. If you don't see a listing for Enhanced USB controllers then you don't have the correct drivers installed or the board doesn't properly support Vista.

How did you determine the ports are functioning as USB 1.1? You do understand you will never get anywhere near the 480Mbps?

the usb's do display as enhanced. I figured out that the usb ports are working only as 1.1 by the computer saying the devices will perform faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port. Some of my USB 2.0 exclusive devices dont work with the pc too. I also did a test, with almost the same pc (AMD Athlon64 4000+ 2.40GHz/1.5GB Ram, Compaq), and that pc transfers data very fast. I suspect it may be a power issue. It doesn't charge any of my portable devices.

Did your computer come with Vista installed? Are you currently using Vista or WinXP?

my pc came with windows xp sp2 installed, but i purchased a Vista disk (not the upgrade one) and installed vista. I am currently using vista as my primary OS. I have Windows XP sp2 on a different hard drive that i sometimes use to run programs that only work with XP. But the USB issue is still there with both OS's.

How about this one? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...

Did you happen to run the Vista hardware assessment? http://www.microsoft.com/technet/so...

Run from within WinXP to see if your computer is fully Vista Compatible.

The variants of the A8N motherboard are not all Vista capable.
