Hello all,

I have a USB 2.0 device but it runs at 1.1
I've installed SP2 but i keep getting the same Note:

'The USB Mass Storage Device is a Hi Speed USB device and ill function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-Hi Speed port.
Recommendation:
You must add a Hi Speed USB Host controller to this computer to obtain max performance.'

I guess the question is - is the USB Host Controller or USB 2.0 port a hardware requirement? As i thought USB1.1 & 2.0 was only a software discrepency.

Regards,
Phili

Apparently you have an older motherboard that doesn't support USB 2.0. In other words, it doesn't have a built-in USB 2.0 controller. If you want/need USB 2.0, you'll have to add a PCI USB 2.0 adapter card. They're not very expensive. Here's an example:

usb1.1 and usb2.0 are down to the hardware , not the software. 40 times as fast if you have usb 2.0
Usb 2.0 devices work in usb1.1 ports and usb 1.1 devices work in usb 2.0 ports. But the speed will be 1.1 speed. You only get usb2 speed if the port and device are both usb 2.

Id have to agree.. even if the system supports USB 2, your hardware must also. The good news is you can get a USB 2 PCI card very cheap these days... most of them have at least 4 ports on them. That will speed things up a bit Id think :)

Your MBoard MAY support both types. Look in device manager for "Enhanced USB Controller" Many boards during the transition had both USB 1.1 & 2.

Hello all,
Thanks for the quality responses.
Since my PC is realy old i suspect the USB ports are only 1.1. The PCI USB 2.0 adapter card sounds too easy ill invest in one one to bring the USB ports up to date.

Thanks Again,
Phili
