I notice that both the usb 1 and usb 2 look the same.. while i know you cannot use a usb 2 device on a usb 1 port. can you use the usb 1 device in a usb 2 port?? meaning is it backward compatible??.. if i were to plug a usb 1 device into the usb 2 will it work ok?? and how can you tell if a port IS usb 1 or 2?? since to me they look the same??

Read the mobo's manual. It tells u if it supports USB 1.1 or USB 1.1/2.0.

let's say your computer has a 2 port usb 2.0 pci card, since it looks like your mobo doesn't support the 2.0,natively....you can plug in either 1.1 or 2.0 devices

let's say your computer has a couple of usb ports already built-in (being that you have a 1 ghz amd cpu, it's unlikely you have a newer mobo that supports usb 2.0...just my guess without additional info), you can use either 1.1 or 2.0 devices, but it will only run at 1.1 speeds.....hope that helps

There are three standards here. (Note bits not bytes).

USB 1.0 - 1.5Mbs
USB 1.1 - 12Mbs (backwards compatible)
USB 2.0 - 480Mbs (backwards compatible)

USB 1.0 is USB 1.0. USB 2.0 (for many devices that came out when the standard was gaining market ground around December 2002) is either USB 2.0 or USB 1.1.

According to the USB Forum, there are two marketed names and three standards.

From the Slashdot thread:

And of course, their FAQ ask this question:

"Q: How fast is USB

A:High speed USB products have a design data rate of 480 Mb/s. Full speed USB devices signal at 12Mb/s, while low speed devices use a 1.5Mb/s subchannel."

///End /.///

User acidrain69 (632468) notes that in your Windows Device Manager:

"UHCI and OHCI are USB 1.1. EHCI is USB2."

This /. thread has spawned numerous inside jokes which are only recently tapering off.
