US Robotics Modem

I had a Creative Labs Modem Blaster V92 which only would work on V90 even though my ISP supported V92. It wouldn't connect good but download for a file was about 4 to 5 k/s.
I heard that US Robotics was the best so I got the Performance Pro. Connects very fast using V92 but only downloads a file at 1.6 k/s. Internet tests clock it at 13kb/s which is poor. Some say it's the phone lines but the V90 downloaded good. I have software to monitor the connection but doesn't indicate that there is any problems, just shows it slow. Is there something I can do to make this go faster, or is there a problem on the ISP's end? Thanks.

My connection was always at 115,200 bps on the V90 but now it won't connect any faster than 14400bps on the V92.

Hazel we can do everthing that is humanly possible on our end to ensure that we get the fastest connections, download speeds and so on.

Then there are just the things that are out of our hands. Our service providers capabilities, peak times in our Geo area's, and Telco companies (there equipment). I just bit the bullet and went with the cable solution. I found myself doing more and more work from home (I'm a glutten for punishment, & I don't even get paid for it). At least when cable has problems it is still faster than my Dial-Up. I also kept my Dial-Up ISP, just in case. It's only $10.00 per month.

Just because it says your connection is 115,200 bps doesnt make it so. You can put in an initialization string that will make it say 115,000 no matter what hte actual connection really is.

Call your phone company. They should be able to test the speed of your connection (to rule out phone line problems).

Also, the software that is monitoring your connection could be slowing it down.

You might contact USR tech support, explain your concern and they might be able to give you an init string to try.I was having problems with my V92 modem and disconnects.USR gave me an init string that fixed the problem.Just a thought, nothing to lose.

53 k is the fastest allowed by law.My USR performance pro mostly hooks up at 45-50k .But when clocked it may be 35-40k or 10-15k depending on the time of day and humidity in the air. It is most likely a suck ars phone company like Bell South. And you can add extra commands that will make the connection speed show that it is hooked up at the speed you have your modem set at.MSN tried to pull that one on me. That is why I no longer use thier service .That and a lot of other reasons. I knew I was not connecting at 115k. I clocked at 12k

Hazel, Did you install the drivers that came with the USR modem .I had been using the native XP drivers and they went south so to speak. So I installed the V.92 drivers that came with my modem and it works much better. They are not signed by MS so you will get the compatability warning when you install them.
