I built this computer back during the summer with all new parts. All of a sudden like a week ago i noticed that sometimes my computer has been a little bit slower then usual. Not all the time just every now and then. Then like two days ago I went to start up my computer and it took like 20 minutes. I have Farstone restore it that starts up before windows starts up every time. And it took like 10 minutes to create a new restore point which is really weird because it usually takes like 15 seconds. Then after that I got the screen that says windows has not loaded right blah blah blah. Would you like to start up in safe-mode, from your last restore point that windows start up right in, or start windows normally? First I chose start windows normally but when it loaded everything was soooo slow and I kept getting programs not responding. I couldn't load anything. So I restarted it and chose the last restore point that was successful. And everything was fine after that. I did do a virus scan and a scan disk. Nothing wrong. Then I went to do a disk defragmenter and after an hour it was still at 12 percent which is really weird too cause it usually doesn't take that long. So I stopped it because I had to do some work. Then I played a game and after about 30 mins of playing the computer froze and I heard this CLICK from my hard drive and the computer restarted itself. And I got a black screen that said Failed to load file system driver FSDOSS.BIN. What is that? I just hit enter and it took another 20 minutes to load but i chose to start at a restore point and it is running fine now but every time i start it up i get that message. What is wrong?!?! I really need help. My computer has been really fast lately until now. It is kinda weird that this all started when my subscription to norton ended. Can anyone help?

Could be a dying harddrive. Download the disk tools (might be best to download to floppy) from the drive manufacturer and run the diagnostic. It should tell you if anything is wrong.

What AV program did you run? Was it updated? Did you install a new AV program without completely removing Norton? That can cause issues as well.

I would bet it is a mechanical defect based on the clicking sounds, the maxtor tools should tell you. Sounds like it might still be under warranty also.

Check your temperatures.

That hard drive might be dying also. A clicking sound from a hard drive is bad news.

A usb flash drive might work, if you have one with software to make it bootable and if your pc supports boot from usb. Otherwise, install a floppy (they are cheap).

This may be off the wall, but maybe the hard drive is not the problem. There may be a program installed on your system without your knowledge. Antivirus software does not always catch it. Spyware can do a lot of damage. I found out I had spyware on my computer when it became bogged down and the hard drive was eaten up with invisible spam. I finally became so frustrated that I yanked files out and trashed them. The Spyware dug itself into my computer reinstalling itself. I finally gave up and reinstalled my system to get rid of it. Several times I have noticed web sites rewriting stuff on my computer. I have Win98SE and I look in "system information" and "task manager" to tell me what loads up and runs on my computer. Do you notice anything strange running in task manager?

I also have a maxtor that's making clicking sounds.. At first i tried to make a Ghost Image of the disk and was reported "bad blocks" from Ghost, though the drive contains no bad blocks when using "CHKDSK /v".. Sometimes my pc can't boot -hd not found etc.. Getting really frustrated here since the hd is quite new also. Anyway -hope to find the tools being refferd to in here -i don't se any name for it though.. Hope anyone here can write a solution or a tip to put me back on track :)
