Do you have a diskette in the floppy drive? If so, remove it. If not, boot to the XP cd rom and go into recovery mode. See if you can browse the hard drive. If not, your hard drive is out. You could also go into the BIOS and see if the hard drive is listed on the IDE devices that are detected.
