APC smart-UPS products are for servers and data networks. (network managing) The Back-UPS line is more aimed for workstation use. You can see this in available sizes too :)

Smart UPS products usually come with the capability to gracefully shut your computer down in the event of a power failure automatically.

So do Back-UPSes. The main difference for a home user, is remote (network) managing on smarts.

APC Back-UPS units only provide square wave power when on the inverter. Smart-UPS units are true sine-wave outputs -- cleaner power. Smart-UPS units also have AVR (automatic voltage regulation.)
