Is it true that HP computers are only able to read their own brand of ram cards?
Will my Hp Pavilion w1088d be able to read a ram card from other brands like Kingston, Crosair etc..?

Of course...nothing proprietary about the ram hp uses. To get the best or ideally suited for your system then you may want to search the hp support site. Also at www.corsair.com, www.crucial.com and other memory mfg. sites.

If someone told you that you have to get RAM from HP, I wouldn't go to them for any more advise (just my opinion).

We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

I have sad news for both of you

I don't know about the particular model here, but I have, and have had, computers, including HP, IBM, Compaq, and others that used special, proprietary RAM

PERIOD.

If this is true (and I still find it hard to believe.....but....) All the more reason not to buy name brand PC's. What a rip off!!!!!
My apologies to sp0inK if I am wrong

My Gateway 500S was like that. It had a D845GRG Intel mobo that the bios had evidently been tweaked by Gateway to where either I bought from Gateway or from a very select few (Crucial and Viking were 2 I remember) that had Gateway "compatible" memory. It cost me $85 for (1) 256mg strand of PC2100.

I will NEVER buy a system off the shelf again.

It may be, but my HP Pavilion (celeron 300) had no problem with third-party PC100/PC133 sticks..
Lots and lots of *other* problems tho :)
