Comment: Hi, I'm going to upgrade my processor but am unsure whether to go for a 2500+ athlon barton or wait untill amd release their new 64-bit processors. does anyone have any advice? what exactly would be the benefits of having a 64-bit processor compared with the 2500+ barton? any advice would be much appreciated, claire

Reply: (edit)Unless you do some awesome stuff, or just like to have the latest toys regardless of expense, the difference between what's now available and what may be in the pipeline is for 99.5% of the users all wrapped up in hype, with negligeable (at best) performance improvement.

Reply: (edit)I use a Athlon XP 2100+ Palomino, I was to going to upgrade my CPU but to Athlon XP 3000+ Barton but as the Athlon Opetron 64 bit CPU has already come out the Athlon 64 should not be far behind The opetron really is only for servers but the Athlon 64 is for laptops and desktops and is 100% 32 bit backward compatable so I can't wait for the new Athlon 64 either Can't wait to see what it can do :D Zero Cool

Reply: (edit)what os do you plan to use? if you plan to use windows, you'll have to wait a while for companies to make 64bit versions of their products. also, i think they are only making 64bit versions of winxp and win2k3, so u would need one of those. BUT, if you are using linux, you would most likely see the benefits almost right away since linux has supported 64bit computing for the past several years and is therefor more mature, and the way linux is developed allows for quick support of new technologies, like the 64bit athlon. either way, if i had the cash, i would get the 64bit
