Upgrading my computer soon... Need help!

Hewlett-packard Pavilion a1610n desktop
November 18, 2009 at 07:03:39
Specs: Windows XP
Not too big into computers anymore as I've
just been overwhelmed with everything else
going on in my life so I've lost touch with the
technology and am seeking help with

The only specs I know are:

Ram: 960 MB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Core 4200+ 991
Graphics Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE (256
HDD: 250 GB

So I want to upgrade my ram to 4GB and my
graphics card to something a little higher end.
Any recommendations for those two? And
also, so I need to upgrade my power supply or
processor etc in or order to upgrade my
graphics or ram?

Thanks for the help..

If THIS is your motherboard then you can certainly upgrade to 4Gb maximum RAM (though if you are running 32bit Windows then it won't see/use more than 3.3 or so Gb). As far as the graphics card is concerned, I think it depends on how much you want to spend as your system can take any single PCIe card. I don't think there's a lot of point in upgrading the processor as you wouldn't gain much on what you have. The power supply may depend on whether it has suitable connectors for the graphics card you purchase.

"Ram: 960 MB"

You probably have 1GB RAM with 64MB used by the onboard video. How are you coming up with 256MB for the 6150?

"Processor: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Core 4200+ 991

I have no idea what the 991MHz is? The 4200+ runs at 2.2GHz. And you should be getting DDR2-800 to go with it...that's assuming you don't have an older system that uses DDR400.

As for the video card, I'm with kuwese. The Radeon HD4670 w/GDDR3 is the best card you can get without having to be concerned about your power supply.
