I'm upgrading my old system: ASUS P4S8X MB
Intel 2.53ghz CPU
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Vid card

This is what I have purchased:
New System: ASUS nForce A8N-E MB
AMD 3200+ CPU
XFX nVidia 6800GT Vid card

I am planning on using the same HDD with the same Windows installation... Is this a problem?? Do I need to uninstall the software for the Motherboard, and Video Card??

Thx
James

Unfortunately, no. You will most likely need to re-install windows. Unless the motherboard has exactly the same chipset's etc (which would defeat the purpose of an upgrade :)).

i agree, i reckon you will get a blue screen which says on it STOP ERROR followed by some codes. I had this problem and looked up the error codeson microsoft.com knowledge base and found that you can only swap hard discs (easily) if chipset is the same. (Win98SE is better in that respect as you can swap discs without reloading everything from scratch).
I did find on the microsoft site that there is a work around which centres around loading different chipset drivers onto the hard disc from the windows XP disc before you remove the hard disc from the old computer.
It looked frightfully complicated to me. It probably isnt really, but in my experience, microsoft solutions are written in a way that technicians understand and consumers like me have trouble following.
So, in short, it can be done, but might be complicated.
