Comment:

i'm running a GenuineIntel x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 3 with 56.0mbs of memory. Its an Intel celeron 566mhz. i have decided to install another ram chip 256 sdram and i have purchased a new HDD which is western digital 40gb 8mb cache. What i did first is install the new 256mb sdram to make sure that the new ram is readable which came out okay. my computer was able to read the new ram. next i installed the new HDD which i made the WD the master and the previous hdd the slave which is 9gbs, so in total there should be 50gbs of space. once that was done i boot'd up the system and it had ask'd me to wait because its doing an auto detection. so, i waited and waited nothing had changed. i powered down the system and powered it back up still the same results. i had made sure if i can get into the bios which i was able to get into and i checked to see if i could detect the hdd through there still auto detection. so i check the hdd and i have notice that there is no power goin' to either hdds. the cpu fan isn't spinning and only one cdrom light is comin' up(note i have two cdroms drives), i have also notice that i can't even open either cdroms. the power supply fan is spinning. i had tested out both hdd on another computer of mine and they both work fine. i have changed the ide cables in the first computer with the second computers ide cables still the same results auto detection. i have also taken out the new ram and left the previous ram in the slot, still the same results. i have put everything back to the way it was before i even installed the new ram, still the same results. can someone please help me in figuring out what the problem would be??!!

my power supply is switched to 110v. yes, i did take out the new hdd and placed the old hdd as the master. i basically put everything back to the way it was before i even did anything to the computer. before i even did anything everything was working fine, my old hdd was running and it was able to boot up to win98. when i installed the new 256sdram and i still had my old hdd has the master. my computer did boot up correctly and i was able to get into win98. thats how i knew that my ram was readable becuase i had gone to "my computer" properties and it had stated 312mbs of sdram.

how do i find out how many watts my power supply is producing. yeah, i thought of that idea i'm just waiting to receive another power supply cause the one thats in the computer that i'm trying to fix is a switch power supply. the other computer that i used to test the hdd isn't the correct one. question, does it matter what power supply i'm using or is all power supply the samething??....any tips i should know when changing the power supply?? thanks for your help!

there are different power supllies. sounds like you have an AT which has 2 connectors to mobo. the newer ones are atx which is one connection. you cant interchange them. Power suplly should tell how many watts or it might say in the owners manual or omething that came with the computer. when changing the power supply make sure it is unpluged first. The more devices (drives, cd-roms, etc) you connect to your pc the bigger the power supply you need to run them. you said you have 2 hdds, 2 cd-roms, i take it you have a floppy. so you probably want a minimum of 300 or 350 watt PSU

yeah, i just checked the power supply and theres a sticker that tells the model and it says that its a ATX-250W. i think the AT is on my other computer not the one i'm fixin'..cause it has two connectors that connects to the mobo, one connector says p1 and the other one says p2....but on the computer that i'm upgrading it only has one connector thats connects to the mobo. another question if its the powersupply that i may have to change which i hope it is and nothing else. how come when i put the computer back to the way it is before i even did anything it still gives me the same results cause you said that i'm running to many things..if i reduce the drives shouldn't it at least produce some power to the hdd???????....

it should give some power. make sure everything is connected right. Does the fan on the psu still spin. maybe your psu crapped out on you. you can reset cmos to see if that helps. When i built my pc, the psu that came with the case was bad. the fan turned. LEDS all lit up. But afterchanging evrything else besides psu i decided to change it out and it worked. so these things can seem a bit tricky

yeah, the psu fan does spin but everything else doesn't seem to work....well, like i said from before only one cdrom lights up but can't open either one...none of the LEDS on the hdd light up...what would the cmos do if i reset it??....is it possible that i may have fried the motherboard???....

cmos had bios settings. reset it then set defaults see if it helps. make sure you didnt ground your motherboard if you moved it around,by chance.

if i do replace the power supply with one that is a much greater power like the one you recommend the atx-300 or 350...wouldn't that generate to much power to the motherboard??

lets go back to the mobo being grounded. if it is directly in connect with the case then when you turn it on the leds might lite up then shut off just as fast. A way to test this is to lay the mobo on top a of static proof bag and see if it turns on. or if you want you can try and hold it or set it on something like a desk but doing this can cause a static shock to it and mess it up. i have done this before with no porblem. see if this works.
