OS: Windows Vista Ultimate
CPU/Ram: AMD sempron, 512 Mb
Product: BenQ Joybook R23E
Comment:

I recently installed Vista Ultimate on my 10 month old BenQ laptop, but my old graphics card (VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP) is not compatible with any version of Vista. I believe what's happened now is my system has reverted to using the default VGA Graphics adapter, which has pretty shocking graphics and can't really play any movies. I was wondering if anyone knows wether it is possible to upgrade the graphics card in my laptop, or wether there's anything I can do to regain use of my old graphics card? Help would be very appreciated

Upgrade Graphics Adapter probably not!
You can search for some kind of driver.
Recently I installed Vista on a Unichrome VGA integrated on a Motherboard. I got the driver from VIA website since it was a VIA Unichrome.
Try and search the web, you'll probably gonna find some beta drivers!

Good Luck

I'm just a shadow of my former self!

..up to 64MB shared graphics memory is barely enough for Vista Basic, you need at least 128MB shared for Ultimate, also max out the Laptop memory to 1GB because otherwise it will crawl when multi-tasking.

Also read here for other Laptop problems:

Last but not least update the graphics driver. I think this is the one:

hey Santa, thanks for the info. I followed the last link you provided and downloaded the driver for my graphics adapter, but after extracting the files and running setup, I got an error message halfway through installation that stated:

"!! INF does not describe detected hardware!!
Device or vendor ID (or subsystem) mismatch!!

StopTimer OK, but no timer action occurred.
Trying to copy relevant part of Setupapi.log
No change detected, nothing to copy.
-> Setup was unable to complete the installation.

** Installation Failed **
!! Setup was aborted !!
******** End of progress log ********

If you have any other ideas or driver links, please let me know. All the help is appreciated. Many thanks
