OS: Windows XP Professional S
CPU/Ram: 512
Product: Dell Optiplex GX240
Comment:

I have a dell optiplex gx240 and it is kind of sluggish, i wanted to know how much RAM i can upgrade it to without messing anything up. I had 256 originally and put 256 more. I wanted to know if i can drop 2gb without messing the motherboard up. Even 1gb would be nice. My CPU is a 1.7ghz, the computer is old but i dont want to buy a new computer just yet because this one is perfectly fine. I have a 24-bit soundcard and a geforce mx4000 card w/ built-in fan. I wanted to get a better card to but my board is AGP8x equipped.

I might end up getting a new computer but for now i want to use this one until i cant no more.

as far as I can recall the gx240 uses 168 pin SDRAM, not newer DDR ram. That old ram in larger capacity sticks is expensive, much more than DDR ram.
What are you using the PC for? More ram does not always mean faster. There comes a point where extra ram makes virtually no difference, and then to a certain extent depends on what you are doing.
A lot of people have slow computers due to them having years and years of accumulated stuff on the hardrive clogging it up or too much antivirus/firewall stuff strangling all life out of the computer.
Wiping the hard drive and reloading windows often has a miracle effect on speed and its like a new PC again

According to Crucial.com, your PC can accept a max of 1GB, 512MB per slot.

So? There are still plenty of decent AGP cards available.
