Hi guys, i have a custom built pc running:

2800amd processor
1gb ddr ram
ati radeon 9800 pro
crap sound card
motherboard (not sure )

its a year old and i want to upgrade it a little. I wondered if anyone could recomend any upgrades for my pc that would make a difference to the performance of the system.
I dont want to spend £500 i want it to be worthwhile though. Any ideas on cost would be good too. Cheers guys

We need to know the motherboard make/model. The CPU/RAM/video are reasonable & IMO, soundcard is a matter of taste...but if the motherboard is based on a crappy chipset, it will affect the performance of the entire system

ASUS A7N8X-X
Athlon XP 1800+
8.5 x 200MHz
1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB
WinME/WinXP Pro SP1

Without specific details of your motherboard it is not possible to suggest suitable upgrades. Does your system no longer do what you need it to? Your upgrade path will depend entirely on your intended use, and the exact specifications of your current equipment including the rated speed and type of your ram. Are you a gamer? Do you do CPU intensive tasks like video-editing or CAD. Do you require extreme multi-tasking capability?
The expression " make a difference to the performance" is too general. You say you don't want to spend 500. How much are you looking to spend and what do you hope to gain?

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

The board can handle up to 3gb ram. I'm not sure whether a faster processor is available. Your motherboard manual should tell you what will work. Sorry I know nothing about high end soundcards. but from your last reply that would seem to be your priority.

another thing i want to do is get a good dvd rewriter and id like some more usbs audio in etc at the front of the machine. All i have seen up to now is kits that redirect the usb from the back to the front.

Anyone recomend how to make my machine quiet as it is v noisy?

how much difference would another gb of ram make? i mean without upgrading the 2800 amd processor?

cheers the feedback is much appreciated

More RAM would 'probably' speed up the CAD program. But I doubt if it would help anything else. Unless you have everything running all the time.
