Hello Everyone,
I want to replace an old mobo (233) with a new board. Should I stay with 32x or move up to 64x.
I am looking at a 2gig cpu and feel this should be good enough speed until they develop a micro super computer.

Will my present software work on the 64 computer, or should I stay with another 32 board.

The other hardware that I have with my old computer (I suspect)should function with the 64 board without any problems.

Is the 64 board, the so called wave of the future?

As always, I appreciate your help and input, and I thank you in advance for your help,
frank

64 bit CPUs and mainboards arent the issue with software compatibility. the software will run just same on it as long as you still have a 32-bit OS. it is when witching to a 64-bit OS that you need to worry aout that.

as far as 64-bit being a "wave of the future", yes it most likely is, but it will probably be many years before 32-bit stuff has faded away. i wouldnt upgrade just for the purpose of getting 64-bit, but if you are biulding a new rig, biuld one that is 64-bit hardware so you are "compatible with the future"

can we have more detail on what you want to biuld, where you want to get it from, how much you plan to spend??

Thanks for your input Dragon306, I have as you can see an old computer at the speed of 233mhz. I was looking at a board on pricewatch for about $130, It uses an amd athlon at 1.8g. All the other components I have, all I wanted to replace was the board and possibly increase my memory.

jam always seems to be able to find a good deal on a socket 754 board and a sempron64 from outpost.com..

I do believe this is the combo he usually recommends..

it should perform very well, and the board is based on the nforce3 chipset, which is among the best for socket 754..

yes he has an idea there but yours is a fair price too. what type of RAM does the board you want to get take? i recommend 512mb or 1gb of RAM. what video card you planning on??

btw, what will become of the old 233mhz machine? interested in selling, email me:

Thanks guys for your input and suggestions.
Bronco I will check out outpost, I had an esc mobo before and was looking at that board. I will look at the board and cpu you suggested.

Dragon306, I was planning to keep the computer and just replace the board. I have 512k on the board and might go up to 1g in memory. I forgot the name of the card I bought, but it was a standard video card, not one of the so-called high powered ones.

I was on the amd website and they have a few cpu's, the sempron chip was their bottom chip, my old computer had the athlon chip and was happy with its performance. The sempron is said to replace the athlon. I guess the sempron will do the job for my desktop, would you have any comments about this and their other cpu's, I would again appreciate your input.
frank

You can't beat that ECS nForce3 250 board w/Sempron 3100+ for $80. Here's a thread from another forum about it...it's 35 pages long & growing. Pay particular attention to entries by Zap & furballi, they're "experts" with this combo:

well i could just buy the old board off of you then, and its CPU and RAM. there is absolutely no way your old RAM will work in a new motherboard, as any mobo you buy will want DDR or (maybe) RDRAM (but they dont sell many of those anymore, thats "old" technology)

if you're running a pentium 233, you're gonna need new ram and a new power supply at very least. you'll also want to replace your hard drive with a newer, faster drive, and eventually you're probably gonna want a dvd writer..and that case may or may not cut the mustard..so you may as well save yourself some headaches and just build a new machine from scratch. the sempron is amd's 'low-end' chip, but it's still a good cpu, and it'll be worlds faster than the pentium 233, or even an athlon on the socket a platform. besides, you can always get an athlon64 and install it in that board later. you can get a gig of pc3200 for about $80, and a decent sized hard drive for around $75. Cases aren't too expensive, and you could certainly try to use the one you have now, but if you do decide to get a new one, newegg has a good selection of cases.

Here are some recommendations:
