Upgrade XP home to XP Pro

I want to upgrade my dad's pc from xp home to xp pro. My question is...in performing the upgrade, will his pc lose any personal data and will all of the software\software settings stay the same?

Why are you switching from XP home to XP Pro? I don't consider that an upgrade for a home user.

you do not normaly lose data doing this but some time there can be problems. so back up all i,m portant data.
